No Ductwork? No Problem: Ductless Mini-Splits for Older Snohomish County Homes

A ductless mini split installation heats and cools your home without any ductwork. A slim outdoor unit connects to one or more wall-mounted indoor units through a small 3-inch hole in the wall. For older Everett, Edmonds, and Mukilteo homes built before central HVAC was standard, it’s the fastest, cleanest path to whole-home comfort — most installs finish in one to two days.

If your home was built before the 1970s, there’s a good chance it was designed around a boiler, baseboard heaters, or a wall furnace — not ducts. Every August, we talk to homeowners who assume air conditioning means tearing open walls and ceilings to add ductwork. It doesn’t.

How a Mini-Split Works

A ductless system has two parts: a compact outdoor unit (the heat pump) and one or more indoor “heads” mounted high on the wall. A small line set — refrigerant lines, power, and condensate drain — connects them through one 3-inch opening per room. Because it’s a heat pump, the same system that cools your living room in August heats it in January.

Why Older PNW Homes Love Ductless

  • No demolition — keeps original plaster, trim, and ceilings intact
  • Zoned comfort — set the bedroom to 68° and the living room to 72°
  • No duct losses — leaky ducts can waste 20–30% of a central system’s energy
  • Whisper-quiet — indoor units run quieter than a refrigerator
  • Replaces expensive electric baseboard heat with 2–3× the efficiency

One Room or the Whole House?

🌱 Single-Zone

The Problem Room

Perfect for that one space that never behaves: the upstairs bedroom that bakes in August, the garage conversion, the bonus room over the garage, or a home office. One outdoor unit, one indoor head, often installed in a single day.

🍂 Multi-Zone

Whole-Home Comfort

One outdoor unit powers up to eight indoor heads across the house. Each room gets its own temperature control — and the system replaces both your old heaters and the window AC units rattling away every summer.

⚠ Pacific Northwest Note

Snohomish PUD and Puget Sound Energy have offered rebates for converting from electric baseboard or wall heat to a ductless heat pump. Programs change annually — we’ll confirm current rebates as part of your estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the wall units ugly?

Today’s indoor units are slim, neutral-white, and sit high on the wall — most guests never notice them. For certain layouts, floor-console and ceiling-cassette styles are also available.

How disruptive is installation?

Minimal. There’s no ductwork to build, no drywall demolition, and no attic crawl. A single-zone install is often done in one day; whole-home multi-zone systems typically take two.

Will it actually heat my home in winter?

Yes. Mitsubishi Electric’s cold-climate models deliver full heating capacity well below freezing — more than enough for Snohomish County’s mild winters, and dramatically cheaper to run than baseboards.
